Capability

GRP – the company as well as the material - has an outstanding track record in the marine industry. Advances in moulding systems have gone hand in hand with advances in hull design and marine engineering. Today, GRP Laminates is taking this cutting edge knowledge and production capability beyond marine, into shore-based and aviation industries.

The company specialises in the manufacture of composite mouldings for marine craft, buildings, cars, aviation and public spaces, as well as hospitality and leisure environments. The team can also undertake
in-situ alterations and repairs, for example on boat hulls, decks or wheelhouses.

We have separate trimming, woodwork, moulding and finishing teams and use lean manufacturing techniques. GRP Laminates was a UK case study for lean manufacturing implementation with the Manufacturing Advisory Service.

We use all types of GRP and FRC moulding systems, including:

Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM)
This closed mould process uses an injection machine to introduce resin into the mould. Using this method reduces labour costs, controls thickness and weight and keeps emissions down.

Vacuum Infusion
Also known as resin infusion, this is a simple, adaptable process using a flexible film and traditional mould.

Hand Lay Up
The simplest and original form of GRP moulding, labour intensive and highly skilled, used for custom-built, bespoke and one-off components such as prototypes or custom built yachts. Resin is applied to the reinforcing material laid in the mould manually (by spray, brush or roller).

The type of resin and reinforcing material used will depend on the process selected as well as the form, function and technical specification of the item being produced. We have expertise in using glass, aluminium, Kevlar, carbon and other fibres and the full range of catalysed and UV-cured epoxy and polyester resins.
